Cantwell Statement on Memorial Day

Monday, May 30,2011

SEATTLE, WA – Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) released the following statement in recognition of the nation’s armed forces and veterans on Memorial Day:

“On Memorial Day, we take time to reflect on the sacrifices made by our nation’s greatest heroes, the brave men and women who have fought and continue to fight courageously to defend our way of life.

“Amid the festivities that mark the beginning of summer, we should spare a quiet moment to honor the tens of thousands of active-duty Armed Forces and National Guard and Reserve members who risk their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. This day gives us a chance to remember the sacrifices and hardship of these American soldiers and those who have fought in the past.

“For many of us, the best tribute we can pay to those who served valiantly is to recall their stories. I remember my own father. He volunteered to serve in the Army Air Force during World War II, and flew missions over Europe. I’m reminded of his dedication every time I meet one of our soldiers.

“I’ll never forget the service members I talked to while visiting Iraq. Or any of those at Washington’s military bases that I’ve spent time with. And I think of our military families – the children, siblings, parents, and spouses who, on this day, are thinking of a loved one in harm’s way on the other side of the world.

“Washington state has a proud history of involvement in and support for our nation’s Armed Forces. This Memorial Day, I especially celebrate the men and women from Washington who have given so much to our nation, including the thousands of citizen soldiers who serve in the National Guard and Reserve. Today, we honor their courageous service to our great nation.”
