Cantwell Statement on World AIDS Day

Thursday, December 01,2011

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On World AIDS Day, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) released the following statement:

“World AIDS Day serves as an important reminder of the global effort to defeat HIV/AIDS,” said Cantwell. “On this day, our thoughts are with the 33.3 million people who have been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and the family members and friends who have watched loved ones suffer from this virus.

“Since the first World AIDS Day in 1988, we’ve made important strides in the effort to erase HIV/AIDS. Across the globe, education, prevention methods, and medical innovations have helped saved the lives of countless children and adults.

“But there is still work to be done. The nearly 10,500 Washingtonians living with HIV/AIDS are counting on us to continue leading research and education efforts to treat and prevent the spread of the virus. I know groups like the Evergreen AIDS Foundation and the Spokane AIDS Network, among many others, are helping Washington state do its part. Together, we can protect the next generation against this disease while caring for those living with it today.”
