Press Release of Senator Cantwell

Cantwell Honors Crew of USS Abraham Lincoln

Wednesday, December 07,2011

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) released the following statement today marking the departure of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln from its years-long homeport of Naval Station Everett. The USS Lincoln, which has been in Everett since 1997, is relocating to Virginia after a deployment to the Middle East.

“The USS Abraham Lincoln has been a bedrock of the Everett community for many years. As the Lincoln leaves its Washington homeport for the last time, we extend our heartfelt appreciation to its crew and their families for their service to our nation, and we wish them well as they relocate to their new home.

“In 2003 I was honored to have the opportunity to join the crew onboard the USS Abraham Lincoln as she returned to Everett after nearly 10 months of deployment – at the time the longest ever for a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. As we bid the USS Abraham Lincoln farewell, we welcome the USS Nimitz, her crew and their families to Naval Station Everett and to the Washington community.

“Naval Station Everett represents a key national security asset, and recent investments in the base have helped make it one of the most modern in the world.  With the multiple strategic benefits, enhanced resources for service members and their families, and a strong and engaging surrounding community, Naval Station Everett will serve the USS Nimitz well.”
