Cantwell Statement on Memorial Day

Monday, May 28,2012

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) released the following statement in honor of Memorial Day:

“On Memorial Day the nation pauses to reflect on the sacrifices made by the men and women who have fought and continue to fight courageously to defend our way of life. We remember the generations of Americans who fought for our country, from the Revolutionary War through World War II, Korea, and Vietnam to our recent military engagements.

“Today we must also honor the Americans who lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the thousands of others who still carry wounds from those battlefields. We also thank the thousands of service members who are serving in places around the world.

“I’ll never forget the service members I meet at Washington’s military bases who serve our nation in places around the world. And I think of our military families – the children, siblings, parents, and spouses who, on this day, are thinking of a loved one in harm’s way on the other side of the world. And I think of those who carry the memories of loved ones who have been lost in battle.

“Washington state has a proud history of involvement in and support for our nation’s Armed Forces. This Memorial Day, I especially celebrate the men and women from Washington who have given so much to our nation. Today, we honor their sacrifices and their courageous service to our great nation.”
