Cantwell Applauds Federal Workforce Grant for Lower Columbia College

In letter sent last year, Sen. Cantwell backed grant to Longview college for training

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) applauded an $845,000 grant awarded to Lower Columbia College by the Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration to help purchase worker retraining equipment for the college’s new Health and Science Building in Longview.

Cantwell wrote in support of LCC’s grant application in a June 2013 letter to the Economic Development Administration, pointing out that about 20 percent of the college’s students will participate in programs in the new building.

The competitive Public Works Assistance Grant will help replace outdated equipment that supports LCC’s nationally-recognized nursing, medical-assisting, and health occupation programs. The grant strengthens workforce training capabilities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and supports the region’s economic diversification and job creation goals.

“This announcement is great news for Lower Columbia College, workers and employers in Cowlitz County,” Cantwell said. “I’m proud to support this important investment to provide workforce training for jobs in the rapidly growing fields of health care and STEM. These tools allow Lower Columbia College to better develop a skilled workforce that will support business growth in Southwest Washington.”
