Cantwell Statement on Tax and Unemployment Insurance Legislation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) today issued the following statement on her vote in support of tax cut and unemployment insurance legislation. The measure passed a key procedural vote 83-15.

“This bill supports job creation and economic recovery by extending and expanding tax cuts for working families and the middle class, and provides a crucial lifeline for those who have been searching for work for an extended period.

“The lion’s share of this package is devoted to tax cuts for the middle class, tax credits for working families, tax incentives for businesses to invest, and help for job seekers. A payroll tax reduction for all working people will save the average family about $1,000. A couple earning about $50,000 with two kids, one of them in college, would save more than $4,000 on their taxes.

“The legislation includes measures important to Washington state, particularly a two-year extension of the sales tax deduction, which delivers tax fairness and keeps nearly a billion dollars in Washington state’s economy over the next two years.

“As the year draws to a close, this bill represents a crucial opportunity to accomplish priorities important to our nation, our economy, and my state.”
