Cantwell Statement on the Retirement of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, our nation's first woman Supreme Court Justice, announced her retirement.

U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell's (D-Wash.) statement follows below:

“Justice O'Connor's tenure on the Court was characterized by her pragmatic, consensus-building approach. I commend Justice O'Connor for her giant contributions to our nation and wish her the best going forward.

“Justice O'Connor's retirement is an excellent opportunity for the President to fulfill his campaign pledge to help bring the country together, rise above partisan disagreement, and help make sure our Court reflects all Americans.

“In our next Supreme Court nominee, I hope the President sends us someone of the finest judicial temperament, who could one day achieve the stature of Justice O'Connor. I particularly encourage the President to consider America's many well-qualified female jurists who meet that high standard.”
