(07-25-11) A meeting intended for invited public & private groups and those County departments involved in land preservation of public and private lands lands was held last Saturday(07-23-11) by Senator Maria Cantwell and Representative Rick Larsen.

Those invited were to take part in a "listening session" regarding designating federal lands in San Juan County a National Conservation Area. State Senator Kevin Ranker served as a moderator.

While the meeting on Saturday morning had clearly been planned for some time, the public announcement was at the last minute.

Cantwell and Larsen said they support the proposal, and both said they plan to introduce the necessary implementing legislation to ensure permanent protection of approximately 1,000 acres of federally-owned lands so they remain in their natural state and publicly accessible.
