WA Senator Cantwell Talks Farm Bill Benefits

The U.S. Senate has passed a half-trillion dollar farm bill that would support many
local jobs. If the bill is passed in the House of Representatives and signed
into law by the president, it would provide funding for agriculture research
and export programs that are critical to Washington farmers.

Washington Senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray both applauded the passing of the
bill. Senator Cantwell told NBC Right Now what the new legislation could
mean to our region.

"Farm Country means big jobs in Washington State and we want to have the
predictability and certainty of some of these programs like the research for
specialty crops and things that are important to our farmers," she said.

In the Columbia Basin growers produce $2.4 billion worth of agricultural products. The
new farm bill would set a long term plan to preserve this business and other
national industries like it.
