Cantwell Statement on Martin Luther King Day

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) released the following statement in honor of Martin Luther King Day.

“Today, we remember the life of an American civil rights leader whose legacy reminds us that we must continue the march for equality every day. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s strength and leadership inspired our nation to confront injustices and to open the doors of opportunity for more Americans.

“85 years after his birth, Dr. King’s vision endures and his dream lives on. This year, we also celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, landmark legislation that was made possible by Dr. King’s leadership and by the March on Washington he led one year earlier. But there is still work to do to ensure that the rights of all Americans are protected. Today, we honor Dr. King through service to our communities, by continuing to work for social justice and equality, and by working together to build the nation he envisioned.”
