Cantwell Announces Washington State Will Receive $59 Million in Weatherization Assistance Funding to Create Jobs, Make Homes More Energy Efficient

Spokane, WA -- Senator Cantwell will hold a press conference to discuss benefits of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, specifically job creation for workers who weatherize homes and the benefits to low-income individuals who have their homes weatherized in communities throughout Spokane.

The DOE’s Weatherization Assistance Program allows low-income families to reduce their energy bills by making their homes more energy efficient, reducing heating bills by an average of 32 percent and overall energy bills by hundreds of dollars per year. It will allow an average investment of up to $6,500 per home in energy efficiency upgrades and will be available for families making up to 200% of the federal poverty level – or about $44,000 for a family of four. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act provided Washington state with $59 million in Weatherization Assistance Program funding. Spokane Neighborhoods Action Program (SNAP) provides human services for low-income and vulnerable members of the community. The Recovery Act funding will nearly double the money SNAP has available to weatherize homes, which will create 10 new jobs in Spokane and will allow SNAP to weatherize an additional 600 homes, on top of the 320 it normally weatherizes in a year.
