Cantwell Applauds Approval of Allegiant Air’s Lease for New Bellingham Airport Facility

Cantwell: ‘Allegiant’s continued growth expands air travel services and supports local jobs’

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) applauded the Bellingham Port of Commissioners’ approval of a 30-year property lease at Bellingham International Airport for a new facility being built by Allegiant Air. The new building – to replace temporary buildings Allegiant currently uses near the airport – will house office space, a rest area for the airline’s flight crews and a storage area. Allegiant Air has been operating at Bellingham International Airport since 2008.

“That Allegiant Air is looking to make a long-term commitment to Bellingham International Airport is great news for the community,” Cantwell said. “Allegiant’s continued growth expands air travel services and supports local jobs, and we welcome its commitment to continue serving Northwest Washington.”

“As Chair of the Aviation Subcommittee, I was proud to fight for continued airport improvement program funding in the FAA reauthorization,” Cantwell said. “These investments support projects like the new terminal at Bellingham International Airport that expand airport capacity and create incentive for airlines like Allegiant to grow.”

As Chair of the Senate Aviation Subcommittee, Cantwell was a Congressional leader in championing the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reauthorization bill, which was signed into law by President Obama on February 14, 2012. The FAA bill reauthorizes the FAA through 2015, accelerates the air traffic control system’s conversion to a GPS-based network, known as NextGen, and provides stable funding for Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grants to invest in expanded airport capacity and improved infrastructure and safety.

At Bellingham International Airport, AIP grants in recent years have helped with the construction of a new passenger terminal as well as purchasing equipment so the airport can better serve increased flight volumes.
