Cantwell holds first meeting with student group
(Washington, D.C.) Senator Maria Cantwell took a welcome break from confirmation hearings on Bush Cabinet nominees today to meet with a group of students from Elma Middle School -- her first meeting with Washington students as a U.S. Senator.
The students traveled from Elma, Washington to the nation's capital to learn about government and to meet their elected representatives. The students asked Cantwell about energy issues and the environment.
Cantwell commended the students for their active interest in government, and noted that her own interest in politics started at a young age. "Young people bring energy and idealism to politics," she said. "They remind us that politics is about people, not partisanship. Our first responsibility is to ensure that their generation has a bright future."
The students are: Wendy Overton, Frankie Warren, Ryan Meister, Daniel Curulla, Chris Henry, Liisa Koski, and Bethany Cox. Their teacher is Rob Ohashi.
