Cantwell, Murray Announce Federal Transportation Funds for Earthquake Recovery
Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senators Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Patty Murray (D-WA) today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation will provide Washington state with $15.3 million in Federal Highway Administration Emergency Relief funds for repair of damage to Federal-aid highways caused by the February 28, 2001 Nisqually earthquake.
According to a Washington State Department of Transportation report, the statewide total cost of transportation repairs is $16.5 million. The federal dollars provided by the Department of Transportation will reimburse Washington state for the damage repair work that is already completed and provides funding for the remaining damage repair work to correct major or unusual damage to federal-aid highways.
"This money is an important investment in helping Washington state's transportation infrastructure rebuild from the damage caused by the Nisqually quake," Senator Cantwell said.
"I am proud to have been able to help Washington state recover from the Nisqually earthquake," Senator Murray said. "These dollars will provide critical help to repair our roads and bridges and to provide jobs for Washington workers."
Immediately following the earthquake, the Washington State Department of Transportation began assessing the damage and making repairs to state highways and facilities. Eligible repair work includes reconstructing damaged bridges and paved surfaces, establishing detours, removing slides and debris, and replacing signs, lighting and guardrails.
