Cantwell Reacts to Word of New Mad Cow Case in Canada
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell issued the following statement, upon word of a newly-confirmed case of Mad Cow disease in Canada.
“We need to gain the confidence of Asian markets for U.S. and Washington state beef,” said Sen. Maria Cantwell. “But we are not going to get that accomplished if we still have feed loopholes and problems in Canada that could spread to the United States.”
Today, the Canadian government announced that a cow under seven years of age has tested positive for Mad Cow disease. Serious questions exist about the reliability of Canada's enforcement of its 1997 ban on the inclusion of ruminant products in cattle feed. Some recent reports have shown that four brands of Canadian cattle feed that were supposed to be free of ruminant materials may well have contained the banned materials.
Meanwhile, the Bush Administration on January 4, 2005, issued a new rule, proposing to reopen the U.S./Canada border to allow importation of Canadian beef.
