Cantwell Statement on President Obama’s Plan to Nominate Gary Locke as Ambassador to China

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) released the following statement in response to news reports that President Obama is planning to nominate Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke as the Ambassador to China:

“Gary Locke is uniquely qualified to be Ambassador to China. As a former governor from a state with strong economic ties to China, Locke has had a long understanding of issues in Asia. As Commerce Secretary, Locke has been in many of the Obama Administration's discussions with China on energy, trade, and technology piracy issues.

“This is good news for Washington state, because it will further enhance the relations between our state and China. And this is good news for the United States because Locke’s credentials give him the opportunity for even more frank dialogue between America and China.”
