Cantwell to be Honored as a "Friend of the Blues"

WASHINGTON, D.C.- U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) will be honored tonight by the Seattle-based Experience Music Project (EMP) and Vulcan Inc. as a “Friend of the Blues” for her congressional work in declaring the year 2003 as the “Year of the Blues.” “The Blues have had a major impact on the music industry today,” said Cantwell. “Many forms of music today, including rock and roll, jazz, and even classical, are based off of the rich and diverse roots of the Blues. Hopefully the ‘Year of the Blues’ will help to educate future generations so that they too can understand the importance of the Blues.”

The “Year of the Blues” is an entertainment, education, and outreach program to celebrate and create greater awareness for the blues and its place in history and evolution of music and culture. The Blues have documented African American history for the last century and have influenced other forms of music such as jazz, rock and roll, country, and even classical.

Several national events will take place in celebration of the Year of the Blues. Other programs throughout the year include blues concerts, films, lectures, album recordings, a book and an educational series for schools.
