Five-Year Testing Safety Measure Included in Senate Pipeline Bill
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Maria Cantwell joined Senators Jon Corzine and Robert G. Torricelli of New Jersey and her Washington State colleague Senator Patty Murray in offering an amendment to bolster the pipeline safety legislation passed by the Senate today.
The safety measure, which was adopted as part of the overall bill, requires pipelines to be tested at least every five years to ensure that safety standards are being met and the safety of people living near pipelines is not compromised.
"Today’s amendment requiring five year mandatory testing is only a first step in providing victims’ families the safety they demand in hopes of sparing other families the horror they have experienced," said Senator Cantwell. "People want accountability and real protections. This legislation is an improvement but it doesn’t go far enough. I look forward to working with Senator Murray and Representative Larsen to improve this legislation as it moves through the Congress."
During consideration of the pipeline safety legislation today, Cantwell joined with Corzine, Torricelli and Murray to offer the five-year testing amendment because she believes the safety protections in the legislation should be strengthened. Cantwell hopes that when the House takes up their version of the bill or during additional legislative activity, the bill can be strengthened further.
