Senator Maria Cantwell to Give Keynote address on Internet Privacy

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) today announced that she is giving the keynote address at the National Association of Attorneys General Second Annual Internet Law Institute on the prospects of federal Internet privacy legislation. The speech will be webcast live on the Association’s web site.

Cantwell will address consumer privacy in online commercial transactions, which she believes should be protected by federal law. Industry has done well with self-regulation -- when companies choose to regulate themselves. But without legal recourse, consumers are not adequately protected from misuse or mishandling of their personal data -- and they do not feel comfortable using the Internet to do business.

In fact, sufficient protection for personal information will only come from a combination of technological solutions with adequate legal protections. If we want the Internet to thrive as a place to do business, we must enact appropriate consumer protections now.
