Cantwell Slams FDA’s Decision to Approve ‘Frankenfish’

WASHINGTON, D.C. Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) issued the following statement on the FDA’s decision to approve genetically engineered salmon which grow more quickly than Atlantic salmon.

“This decision is a mistake. I am extremely disappointed the FDA took this unprecedented step to approve genetically engineered salmon and not require the necessary labeling. I will continue to fight to ensure that genetically engineered salmon are labeled. Wild seafood from Washington and Alaska are more sustainable than frankenfish—and our consumers have a right to know where their fish come from.”

The newly approved genetically engineered salmon grow much faster than normal Atlantic Salmon, reaching market size in 16 to 18 months instead of three years. Additionally, little is known about the potential biological impact of escaped genetically engineered fish on wild salmon populations. Once genetically modified salmon becomes available for market consumption, the FDA will not require labeling, leaving consumers in the dark about what they are buying.
