Feds give airport $200,000 to boost air travel

Pangborn Memorial Airport has won a $200,000 federal grant to fund a marketing campaign to increase air travel and air service.

Sen. Maria Cantwell traveled to Pangborn Tuesday to announce the award and tour the airport.

Trent Moyers, airport manager, said half the money would be used to buy advertising to encourage travelers to visit the area aboard the Alaska Airlines shuttle that flies several times daily between Pangborn and Sea-Tac International Airport.

The other half of the grant will be used to reach out to airlines that serve the U.S. Southwest region to develop an alternative flight into and out of the area for snowbirds seeking winter sunshine and warm-state residents looking for snow.

The airport was one of about 30 across the country to receive grants, Moyers said.

Pangborn was awarded its long-awaited funding this year to lengthen its runway so larger planes can take off and land.

Federal budget cuts have slowed the project, Moyers said, but he expects to finish land acquisitions and complete design work next year. Construction should begin next year and continue to 2015 with the relocation of part of Grant Road. The runway extension should happen in 2016, he said.
