Trump Defies Federal Court Orders to Restore SNAP Funding: Where in WA Will SNAP Cuts Hit Hardest?
Top 3 counties with highest percentage of population receiving SNAP all in Eastern WA: Yakima (21.7%), Ferry (20.8%), and Okanogan (20.8%)
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Moments ago, President Donald Trump signaled that he will continue to let Americans go hungry, defying two federal court orders to fully restore SNAP benefits for the 42 million people who receive them. Despite having the USDA emergency contingency funds available to restore benefits now, the Trump administration is doubling down to use hunger as a political weapon. U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA), ranking member of the Senate Commerce Committee, and senior member of the Senate Finance Committee, released the following statement:
“Trump's tariff chaos has already made it more expensive for families to buy groceries. Now, he is causing even more chaos and uncertainty for the millions of families who rely on SNAP to put food on the table. He must stop weaponizing hunger and instead focus on bringing costs down, a promise he has failed to keep,” said Sen. Cantwell.
President Trump posted the following on Truth Social this morning:

Yesterday, Sen. Cantwell (D-WA) released data showing the total number of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients in each of Washington state’s 39 counties. The table below also shows the percentage of each county’s population that receives SNAP benefits. The data, provided by the State of Washington, is for March 2025. It shows that 903,541 Washingtonians received SNAP benefits in that month, 11.2% of the state’s population.

Congressional Republicans have exacerbated the food security crisis in recent months. President Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill,” passed by House and Senate Republicans and signed into law on July 4th, changed work requirements for Americans to receive SNAP benefits, which is estimated to kick more than 2 million Americans off of food assistance, including 170,000 residents in Washington state.
According to the National Grocers Association, every dollar spent on SNAP generates up to $1.50 in economic activity during economic downturns. In Washington state, SNAP contributes $4.6 billion in sales, nearly 24,000 direct jobs, $962 million in direct wages, and over $1 billion in total taxes.
