Cantwell Statement on Approval of USPS/Valassis Direct Mail Agreement

Cantwell: ‘This decision does nothing to solve the Postal Service’s problems and does great harm to the newspaper industry’

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) released the following statement regarding the Postal Regulatory Commission’s authorization of a three-year negotiated service agreement (NSA) between the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) and Valassis Direct Mail, Inc. The NSA was effective beginning Thursday, August 23.

“This decision does nothing to solve the Postal Service’s problems and does great harm to the newspaper industry,” Cantwell said. “When Congress returns in September, we will try to stop it.”

On June 18, 2012, Cantwell sent a letter to the Postal Regulatory Commission in strong opposition to the USPS-Valassis NSA.
